What is the Difference between a Kelly Daly Osteopath and a Chiropractor?
Osteopathy and Chiropractic have a common origin. Both disciplines believe that misalignment of the spine or musculo-skeletal imbalances can contribute to pain and ill-health in the body. However the method of treatment differs. Chiropractors rely heavily on the high velocity thrust or ‘clicks’ to correct any spinal fixations or misalignments. Although Osteopaths too occasionally use the high velocity thrust, more commonly the treatment will involve guiding the tissues back into alignment using minimal force, stretching, holding, rocking techniques, massage and extremely gentle, subtle, fluid techniques to improve the circulation in an area. Osteopaths as a general rule spend far more time with their patients, treat less frequently, and require less treatments overall than chiropractors.
What is the difference between a Physiotherapist and a Kelly Daly Osteopath?
Although therapists may vary the general differences are the following:
Physiotherapists frequently use a wide range of machines such as TENS and ultrasound to treat affected tissues. At Kelly Daly Osteopaths we believe that a machine can never replace the treatment subtleties of a well trained pair of hands. We also believe in employing a time and labour intensive policy to help you heal. We will never see more than one patient at a time.
Many Physiotherapists will use minimal hands-on treatment and specialise in the prescription of
exercises. Although we will also recommend behavior modification and exercise to help you to maintain your improvement, our sessions are primarily manipulation based.
Physiotherapists will normally work locally to relieve the strain in an area of the body. As Osteopaths we regard the spine as a whole functioning unit. For this reason we will frequently work away from the site of injury to restore harmony and balance to the entire nervous system. Using this approach we often can help injuries that have previously been unresponsive to other forms of manual therapy.
Osteopaths treat an extremely wide range of conditions, not just pain and injury. We do this by observing the fundamental principle of Osteopathy, i.e. that tissues will remain in good health as long as they have an unobstructed blood and nervous supply. This rule may be applied to any system, organ or tissue in the body, not just joints and muscles.Osteopaths have an extremely holistic outlook. Please see the previous section to see what complaints your Osteopath can treat.
